ABOUT WORKING ABROAD

Working abroad is the act of pursuing professional opportunities in a country other than one’s own. 68 percent of the global labor force is willing to work abroad. Only 14 percent of the global workforce is not available for the international labor market. Still there is an enormous difference between the willingness and actual international movement. International labor markets are getting more global, through international jobs websites, search engines and social media. There are interesting enormous differences between countries. Recent researches by GTMS reveal that people living in Latvia, USA and China are less mobile whilst people living in Portugal, Luxemburg and Nigeria are more willing to work abroad.

ABOUT LIVING ABROAD

Immigration is the act of entering a country with the intention of permanently living and working there. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) asserts there are more than 200-million migrants around the world today. Europe hosts the largest number of immigrants, with 70.6 million people as at 2005, the latest year for which figures are available. North America with over 45.1 million immigrants is second, followed by Asia, which hosts nearly 25.3 million. Most of today’s migrant workers come from Asia.

A 2009 survey by Gallup found roughly 700 million adults would like to migrate to another country permanently if they had the chance.Nearly one-quarter (24%) of these respondents, which translates to more than 165 million adults worldwide, named the United States as their desired future residence, while an additional 6.5% of respondents, representing an estimated 45 million, chose Canada. The other top desired destination countries (those where an estimated 25 million or more adults would like to go) were predominantly European. A percentage of respondents representing forty-five million adults named the United Kingdom or France as their desired destination, followed in order of preference by Spain, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
