Study Abroad

In order to study abroad we pursue educational opportunities in a country other than one’s own. According to the British Council’s Student Decision Making Survey which gathered information from 115,000 students in 200 countries over the last three and a half years, international students exhibit distinct patterns for where, why and how they select their destination. Students head to Britain for quality, to the United States for career improvement and to Europe for low tuition fees.

The report also notes that the student market for overseas travel is becoming “more sophisticated” due to greater domestic investment in higher education and more countries offering courses taught in English in non-English speaking countries (to overcome the linguistic disadvantage).

The cost of studying overseas is not a primary determining factor in where a student may choose to study. Only 10% of those surveyed cited cost as one of the three most important factors. It is interesting that 50% of all students who study abroad go to these five countries to further their education: the United States (19%), Britain (10%), Germany (7%), France (7%), and Australia (7%)
